Common Reed (Phragmites australis) as a Bio Refining and Monitoring Plant of Pollution Resulting from Heavy Metals (Case Study: Dez River, Dezful, Iran)

چکیده مقاله:
One of the most important methods to investigate heavy metals as pollutants is more likely to use bio-monitors which can be applied as an appropriate index to express the quality of environment. In current study, in order to investigate the effects of dominant plants in the desired region and role of aquatic macrophytes in monitoring such elements as zinc (Zn), lead (Pb), copper (Cu) and cadmium (Cd) in underground organs, leaves and stems of a specific aquatic macrophyte named Phragmites australis as well as sediment samples of Dez River, Iran in 2012 were studied. Given samples were prepared with the ratio of 4 to 1 nitric acid to perchloric acid and the concentrations of elements were measured by atomic absorption spectrometry. In this study, Enrichment Factor (EF), Bio-accumulation Index and Translocation Factor (TF) were measured. Results indicated that the concentration of metals was reduced in the underground organs, leaves and stem, respectively (stem

متن کاملRole of Phragmites Australis for Biomonitoring and Phytoremediation of Heavy Metals Pollution in Badavar River, Lorestan Province (Iran)
Background & Aims of the Study: Aquatic macrophytes, given their rapid growth and high bio mass production, great potential to accumulate heavy metals in their organs. Phragmites australis as a hyper-cumulative plant plays an important role in the bioremediation. The Badavar River of Noorabad, Lorestan province, is exposed to urban wastewater and agricultural runoffs. In order to heavy metals (...
متن کاملStudy of some growth traits of common reed )Phragmites australis( in Iran
Most of the research on Phragmites australis is restricted to sites on the European continent even though P. australis occurs abundantly in many regions in the Asian and other continents under different climatic and habitat conditions. The populations used in this study were collected from different parts of Iran. All these populations were grown in the same conditions in experimental field, lo...
متن کاملMonitoring of Heavy Metals in Water, Sediment and Phragmites australis of Aras River along the Iranian-Armenian Border
Background: Aras River is the main source of drinking water supply in northwestern provinces of Iran. The present study aimed to determine the concentration of heavy metals in the river on the border between Iran and Armenia. Methods: Three samples were taken from the Aras river water, the river bottom sediments and the root of Phragmites australis. In water sampling, the concentration of Hg, ...
متن کاملResistance strategies of Phragmites australis (common reed) to Pb pollution in flood and drought conditions
Resistance strategies of clonal organs, and parent and offspring shoots of Phragmites australis (common reed) to heavy metal pollution in soils are not well known. To clarify the tolerance or resistance strategies in reeds, we conducted a pot experiment with five levels of Pb concentration (0∼4,500 mg kg-1) in flood and drought conditions. Lead toxicity had no inhibitory effect on the number of...

The frequency distributions of morphometric and mechanical properties of randomly sampled stalks of seven reed stands at Lake Constance-Untersee are analysed by the Estimation-Maximisation Algorithm. The aim was to look for compo...
